"Lifestyles of the Rich and Stupid"
- Guest Blather by Moose
I grew up watching MTV. I was practically raised on it. This was back
In the early 80's, when hair bands were the biggest thing on radio and
Michael Jackson was still black and had a REAL nose on his face. Now,
whenever I'm channel surfing and pull up the good ol' Music Television
station, I rarely ever find a program that has anything remotely to do
with music.
Now, along with their ever so popular "Real World" and "Road
Rules" reality shows, they are doing two NEW shows.."Rich Girls"
And "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica". As if these shows weren't enough,
MTV somehow thinks that the middle class American viewing audience,
really gives a fuck about how these rich people go about their daily lives.
The "Rich Girls" series is about the Tommy Hilfiger daughters. I forced
myself to watch this show, in its entirety, the other day. I had to strap
myself
in a recliner to achieve this. It basically shows these two teenage girls
getting
out of bed, eating a HUGE breakfast in a kitchen that is probably bigger
than my entire house, and then summon the limo so they can be taken to
shop or clothes.
They shopped in these name-brand stores, spent thousands of dollars
and walked out with 4 small bags..all in the time span of 20 minutes or
so. After allowing their smoking credit cards to cool down a little,
they were driven somewhere else to repeat the process. And this routine
played out on every show, every day.
Then, you have the "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica" show. At least these
two simpletons have something to do with music, albeit shitty music, so
MTV gets the benefit of the doubt here.
Yes, Jessica Simpson is hot. Yes, she can sing. Do I care about what
kind of car she drives? How she organizes her dirty laundry (which is
by flinging it over the second floor balcony to a giant veranda/entry way
below.) NO!
This beautiful girl once turned down eating Buffalo wings because she
"doesn't eat Buffalo"! Well...she DID prove she was blonde and that rich
people aren't always intelligent. I'm sick of seeing rich people on television!!
Especially on a TV station that is supposed to be about music.
I don't need to be reminded on a daily basis on where I stand in the food
chain of life. I earn my money the good old fashioned way...by
WORKING. I sell cars for a living. It is my only income. And for what
little money I DO make in commissions, I have to suffer through arrogant,
snooty customers who always want WAY more than what their trade is
worth in order to get it. After having my eyes ground out by Mr. and Mrs.
Customer, being called a liar and a cheater for four hours, I MIGHT walk
away with a hundred bucks.
But most of the time, I'll get the "We'll think about it" excuse, and have
nothing
to show for my efforts but a sweaty brow, hoarse voice, and a bad mood.
But it's the life I choose; the life I love. And at the end of my 12 hour
work
day, I will drive home in my Ford Focus and pull into the garage of my
$100,000 house in my middle-class Cleveland neighborhood. I'll walk through
the front door and probably trip on a pile of week-old unread newspapers.
I’ll will hug my dog, pet my cat, grab a beer from the fridge, and plop down
in my dusty old La-Z-Boy recliner and flip on the Cavs game on my 10-year
old 19" color TV.
And I will love every second of it. I’m sure it’s vastly more fulfilling
than
spending the evening in $5,000 designer socks and contemplating the fates
of all those poor, wingless buffalo.
